GPAT PREPARATION TIPS
  •  In order to prepare for GPAT examination, selection of right amount of study material and smart work with time management is important.
  • Some GPAT aspirants start preparing for GPAT exam before 3-4 months of date of the exam. In this case short notes and study tricks come in handy.
  • You need to prepare short trick notes to remember concepts and lengthy matter efficiently.
  • Time management is crucial while preparing for exam.
  • You need to find proper reference material, previous year question papers in order to prepare short notes and diagrammatic illustrations for study.
  • Use of diagrammatic illustrations and mnemonics will be beneficial while studying pharmacology.
  • Short charts and tree diagrams will also be helpful. E.g. types of vitamins, their role and vitamin deficiencies.
  • When you try to link information with a diagram or an illustration it will be easier to remember other important topics associated with it. E.g. While studying Respiratory system write respiratory disorders, pathophysiology of the disease, therapy available and the classification of drugs pointing mechanism of action on specific area around the diagram of respiratory system.
  • Referring proper material (books) is important because questions are derived from those specific references.
  • Coming to time management- all you need is to stay away from social media and other entertainment for a while.
  • Focus on your studies instead of using mobile phone. (but you can definitely use it for studies)
  • Studying for GPAT seems difficult when one sees so much syllabus and reference material. Without panicking you just need to divide your study in four main subjects viz, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Medicinal chemistry.
  • Detailed syllabus for GPAT is available on NTA site and questions will be based on the same. Below I am suggesting some points in important subjects from which you can start your preparation.
SYLLABUS GPAT 2020 

1.      PHARMACEUTICS
·         You need to remember types of dosage forms, their uses, limitations.
·         Solubility of compounds in parts of water
·     Various additives used in the formulations, their role and general concentrations, especially additives in tablet and parenteral formulations.
·       As tablet, capsule & parenterals are the vast topicsand definitely every year 1-2 questions are there, you need to study those thoroughly.
·     Evaluation methods of parenterals (LAL test, tonicity), tablets (hardness limits, dissolution) and tablet defects (capping, brittleness), types of gelatin and composition (capsule)
·         Types of glass and the tests. Their uses as a packaging material and storage.

2.      BIOPHARMACEUTICS
·         Mechanism of drug absorption and factors responsible for it
·         Gastrointestinal absorption of drugs according to pKa and acidity/basicity of drugs.
·         Basics of IVIVC
·         Dissolution apparatus (IP/USP)- types and applications.
3.      JURISPRUDENCE
·         This subject needs to do topics by heart.
4.      MICROBIOLOGY
·         Research/discovery/invention – name of the scientist(s).
·         Staining techniques- staining compounds and effect on cell wall.
·         Bacteria, fungi and viruses.
·         Sterilization and disinfection tests.
5.      BIOTECHNOLOGY
·         Recombinant DNA technology- role of various enzymes
·         Applications of rDNA technique, PCR technique.
6.      BIOCHEMISTRY
·         All the pathways need to be remembered.
·        Nucleic acids (DNA replication, DNA transcription and translation) and vitamins     are the important chapters.
7.      PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS
·   Prepare short notes for types and applications of titrations. Name of the reagent/indicators and/or instruments used in it.
·         Principles of UV, IR, NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrophotometry.
·         Principles of chromatography and applications.
·         Materials used for chromatography and their significance.
8.      NOMENCLATURE OF BASIC COMPOUNDS
9.      PHARMACOLOGY
·     Classifications of drugs are very important. You can write all classifications in notebook and write general mechanism of action (MOA) beside every class. As mentioned before use anatomical diagram and correlate MOA with it for better understanding.
·        Acute, sub-acute and chronic toxicity studies with their significance (as per OECD guidelines).
10.  PHARMACOGNOSY
·         As very little conceptual matter is present in this subject, one need to do it by heart.
·         Study the drugs given in syllabus.
·     Most of the times, questions were asked on the identification tests of various compounds, extraction and isolation methods, stomatal number, stomatal index, leaf arrangement and leaf margin.
·         Pharmacological action of given plant/part and/or constituent.
11.  HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
·         Basics of all systems
12.  BASICS OF PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
13.  CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
·         Clinical trials, placebo, adverse drug reactions.

CAPSULES I

Capsules are solid unit dosage forms in which the drug substance is enclosed within either a hard or soft gelatin shell. Hard gelatin capsules (HGC) : Hard Gelatin Capsules Contain two parts: a cap and other is a body. Widely used for the filling of powders, granules and pellets. Manufactured by dipping method, which involves steps: Dipping, Rotation, Drying, Stripping, Trimming & Joining . These are less plasticised than soft gelatin capsules. Soft gelatin capsules ( SGC): Soft Gelatin Capsules (Softgels) Referred as softgels as these are made from the more plasticised gelatin film. These are completely sealed dosage form & cannot be opened without destroying the shell. Generally, suspensions or the solutions of drug that do not solubilize the gelatin shell are enclosed in SGC.
